Addiction Recovery Options
leave you between
a rock and a hard place?
It shouldn't! There are other choices.
Choices that put...
- YOU IN CONTROL of what path and time table you choose. You should be told about the full range of options without the assumption that you will choose the method they want you to choose.
- YOU IN AN INFORMED POSITION to self-manage your behavior without having to adopt a new religion.
- YOU IN A POSITIVE CONDITION to change; not being bound or shamed into joining the group by peers, family and societal pressures.
- YOU MEASURING YOUR OWN PROGRESS by your own standards, not someone else's.

A bad habit starts innocently enough. You just want to take the edge off. You want to relax. You find something that helps you find your rhythm, your high function. Maybe even your brilliance. Soon you find that you cannot do without your drug of choice (What I call an "elixir").
Whether your "elixir" is drugs, alcohol, gambling, the Internet, or even sex, you find it harder and harder to recapture that brilliance, that rhythm. Soon it's the elixir that controls you.
When it puts your marriage at risk. . .
When it puts the people most dear to you at risk. . .
When you run out of second chances. . .
You need to take control NOW!!!
You dont have to go it alone

I know because, at one time, I was standing in your shoes. I lost my marriage and my career as an architect to problem drinking and drugs. I can understand the frustration, the feeling of hopelessness, and the incredible stress of trying to hold it all together.
If you think about it, we are not all that different. I'm just a little ahead on the learning curve. The only difference is that I have learned how to make my harmful habits a non-issue.
Because we are not all that different, I know YOU can be proactive in your recover from addiction. I know that you have more than one choice when it comes to your recovery. And because of my experience recovering from addiction, I can say this with confidence.
You can take control of your addiction, without shame, without blame
Despite what the 12-step philosophy will tell you, you have options for taking control of your addiction. You can look at the differences in your options through the eyes of a ship's captain.- Ideally, you are the captain of your ship. It is your hand on the wheel. You decide how to address the perils of the sea.
- With addiction, your control is lost. Your elixir steers your ship.
- The 12 step path tells you to take your hand off the rudder and leave the steering to a "higher power."
The 12-Step path to sobriety isnt for everyone
Why do you have to adopt the 12-step belief system before you can address the consequences of addiction? Why do you have to give up your dignity and self-government to take forward steps with addiction? Are you satisfied with only two alternatives: addiction to the unhealthy behavior or surrendering to a "higher power?"A 12-step program is not the only way.
An imposed choice between "surrendering your life to addiction" or "surrendering your dignity to a 12-step program" is what I would call "a rock and a hard place", and really no choice at all. 12-step methods don't work for everyone. There are a wide variety of options out there, scientifically sound and empirically verified. You don't have to suffer any longer. Take advantage of this opportunity to make the most important change in your life. Recover from your addiction. Measure success on your terms. Plot your own course through life.
Step up to your Bridge and learn to take command of your own ship.
The chokehold of
being forced to use the A.A. model for recovery is loosening
finally.
"When I first heard of Addiction Alternatives, I thought you were evil and destructive, too. You aren't. You're saying that the emperor has no clothes. You're saying the truth. Some of us, indeed, can drink moderately or take medication - even highly addictive medication - without relapsing into a condition that's totally out of control. I don't even 'control' my intake. I simply don't think about it because it's a non-issue. I thank you for what you are doing. There are so many for whom A.A. just doesn't do it and the chokehold of being forced to use the A.A. model for recovery is loosening finally. If you ever have surveys or something else I can help with, please let me know."
-- Sarah, mother of 3, former Vicodin addict
Faith or action: the choice is yours
No captain in his right mind would leave the "rudder of his ship" in the hands of a "higher power." Taking the wheel comes with risks. Success comes with practice. Equipped with the knowledge of scientific tools and expert advice, wouldn't you rather steer your own path?If you are ready to take command of your recovery from addiction, this method may be for you. But, I want you to be sure you have your eyes fully open before you continue:
- This is not a method for you if you are looking for the "magic bullet" to addiction recovery.
- This is not a method for you if you wish to surrender yourself and make a "higher power" responsible for your recovery.
- This is a method for you if you are ready to take command of your recovery.

There's a good reason why . . .
In 12-Step programs, only 1 out of 20 recover from addiction

There is something more important to a 12-step program than your recovery. Consider:
- The standard greeting for all 12-step meetings, "My name is _____, and I am an addict (or alcoholic.)"
- Language of personal powerlessness. De-emphasis of personal responsibility.
- Requirement to abstain from all mood-altering substances forever.
- Reliance on peer/group pressure to maintain conformance.
- Requirement to attend meetings for the rest of your life since you never overcome your addiction.
You dont have to quit all at once
It's not enough to 'stop' bad habits. In order to make meaningful,
long-lasting changes, you have to address the structure of
your behavior.
Second, yielding to an external motive to quit "cold turkey" is a recipe for relapse. In the 12-step world, abstinence is treated as the required first step, rather than as a part of a process of behavioral change. Since the motive is external, you take no ownership in it. This requirement for immediate abstinence plays on your fear, shame and guilt.
In the 12-step world, you have no control over your addiction. That is in the hands of a higher power. In fact, your addiction is regarded as a disease. Yet, ironically, relapsing comes with significant and unpleasant sanctions from the group, including threats of dismissal, shame, or loss of status.
While you are not actually in "control" of your addiction, you still suffer shame and blame if you relapse, as if you were responsible. You have all of the burdens of not having control while also suffering the consequences of your failure to stay sober.
Such a crazy-making paradox is not conducive to healthy changes in behavior.
What you fear is more likely to come to pass. Changes based on fear are not highly correlated with lasting behavioral change.
Stopping "cold turkey" is also an overly simplistic and sometimes naive response to the power that overly practiced behaviors have over your life. It is analogous to expecting a battleship traveling at full speed to stop on a dime and reverse course. There is a momentum to your behavioral patterns. Your harmful habits are interwoven with seemingly harmless routines. These harmless routines can actually feed and promote your addiction.
To simply commit to abstinence without examining the harmless behaviors and habits that trigger, influence, and feed your addictions is a formula for relapse. The inner tension that can result from attempting to reverse a behavioral course without considering the structure of your behavior can be very damaging mentally.
What method gives you the best chance of recovering from your addiction?
A method that leverages your natural ability to accept and manage behavioral change will best support your successful recovery.
Behavioral change does not happen in one step. This is especially true for addictive behavior. Lasting change in behavior happens when it follows a specific sequence. The steps in this sequence are articulated in a model known as the Stages of Change.Successful addiction recovery mirrors a natural progression through this model. You progress through the stages at your own rate. Behavioral changes will never last if a change is imposed before you arrive at the appropriate stage. Here is what a progression through the Stages of Change model looks like when recovering from an addiction:
Stages of Change Model
- Precontemplation - You are not yet ready to acknowledge that your behavior needs to be changed.
- Contemplation - You come to acknowledge the harmful consequences of your behavior, but are not ready or sure it is time for a change.
- Preparation/Determination - You marshal your internal resources to prepare yourself for change.
- Action/Willpower - You undertake new habits and begin to stop old ones.
- Maintenance - You make a conscious attempt to maintain your new habits and behaviors.
- Relapse - You relapse into your old routines, at least to some degree. It is not uncommon for you to cycle through the Action-Maintenance-Relapse stages a number of times. This is a cyclical and corrective process. A time to fine-tune your new changes to support your eventual recovery, not to be shamed by a group.
- Transcendence - The end result of this process is a new permanent place. Your old habits no longer feel a part of your life. To return to your old habits would feel foreign and strange.
You must decide for yourself when a stage is completed and when it is time to move to the next stage. Moreover, this decision must come from inside of you. Stable, long term change cannot be imposed by someone else.
I expect that the triggers will
have muted--they seem to have done so already
"After a number of weekends, I expect that the triggers will
have muted--they seem to have done so already, but I just want
to be on the safe side.
Now the goal is just to remain alcohol-free for as long as
possible. All in all, it feels like it did before I ever drank
at all--that's going back away.
We're still on for mid-July, but I would count this as one
case to put into your success column. Thanks for all the help."
-Steve W., Nevada
There were certain triggers that
compelled the behavior
"Much like we spoke of before, there were certain triggers
that compelled the behavior.
I have had a few drinks with friends during the week and that
has been a very good experience too. The reason is that I generally
stop at one drink now. It's much more interesting than stopping
cold turkey with weak will power."
- Brad S., California

To save your relationship, your job, or your health, wouldn't you want to rely on a process that is proven to be successful?
Brief interventions are the #1 method.Consider what you have accomplished in your life. Whether your accomplishments reside within your professional career, on the athletic playing field, in personal relationships, or in your own home, you were able to attain success because you adopted a process.
The structure of that success was achieved gradually. You undertook a series of new behaviors. Those behaviors resulted in early success. The success was rewarding. Your good habits were positively reinforced. Success built your confidence.
Confidence inspires you onward.
Your accomplishments were built on a series of new habits, subtle changes, and a cycle of success and reinforcement. And most importantly, you were a key ingredient. You had ownership in the process of your developing success.
Just as importantly, your success was built on a series of decisions. Just like a ship captain making small course corrections to keep out of danger or get to port faster.
This is the path that we will take to help you recover from your addiction. Research shows that the most successful method for addiction recovery is brief interventions. These interventions are designed to allow you to take full ownership and the control over your own behavior.
You are the captain of your own ship. I help you navigate through the behavioral obstacles and identify the otherwise harmless behavioral patterns that are feeding your addictions.
In addition to brief interventions, there are a wide variety of tools, strategies, approaches, and medicines that can help you recover from your addiction. There is no one-size-fits-all approach here. We can tailor an approach that is most appropriate for you to have success. And we can begin to identify the best method specifically for you in a brief 60-minute phone call.
Presenting The Bridging Session:
Your plan for addiction recovery

The Bridging Session: Your Path to a New Life
The bridge is the place on the ship where the captain commands his vessel. It is where he controls speed and direction. The Bridging Session is where you prepare to take command of your recovery. A bridge is also a structure which connects your life with addiction to a life where alcohol and drugs no longer cause problems.
You don't need to commit to a lifetime of meetings, yielding control of your life to a higher power, and jump through a series of one-size-fits-all hoops to earn the right to call yourself an "addict". This behavior never addresses the behavioral structure behind your addiction.
You can take advantage of a unique model for recovery. And you can make it happen with a single 60-minute phone call.
Take advantage of a proven recovery process
- No disruption in the normal flow of your life. This is a single session. No need to check in to a program for 30 days or 6 months. No requirement to attend weekly or daily meetings.
- No mandateto give up all of your social network. Maintain your lifestyle and your friendships. Be able to decide if you want to hang out at all of the places you enjoy hanging out in now.
- Take advantage of the power of your own innate problem-solving and achievement skills.
- Take advantage of a process that relies on science, not faith.
- Get the best information to help you make significant, pro-active changes.
- With your new-found by knowledge, learn to harness the skills you already have to change your behavior. Learn to change the key behaviors that have made your addiction so hard to quit.
- Learn the structure to your behavior, including the harmless habits you have that feed your addiction. Identify where to make simple adjustments in your behavior that can make a significant difference.
- Learn to look at an elegantly simplistic method for evaluating your success.
- No group or coaching pressure. Measure success on your own criteria, not a group's.
- This is a one-time only strategy session. No lecture or counseling. You and I put our heads together and identify the steps you want to take in order to make meaningful changes.
- You make a conscious, informed choice, based on harm reduction: abstinence or moderation.
- Private, convenient telephone conversations. You don't have to be near a big city. You don't have to walk into an office. You can call from anywhere in the world. All you need is a phone and a place where you feel comfortable talking to me.
- A friendly, compassionate sounding board should you relapse - along with action steps that will get you back on track as soon as possible.
- Learn how to trust yourself again -- which is the building block of self-esteem and self-confidence to initiate your own growth
- Help and guidance from an internationally acclaimed specialist, psychologist, and popular guest-expert on national radio and TV programs.
What you get in The Bridging Session
that you wont get anywhere else ...
- Comprehensive Core Assessment of the critical factors that influence your addiction. This is a detailed, research-based assessment that builds a complete picture of the behavioral and cognitive influences of your specific situation.
- Complete analysis and discussion of the medications that may be appropriate for you. This is more than just a prescription suggested as a substitute elixir. This is a strategic discussion about how medications can serve your ultimate goals. You won't find a more thorough review of the medications appropriate for your personal situation anywhere. This analysis includes a review of new medications, the pros and cons of each, and how these medications are best integrated with harm reduction strategies to build toward a successful recovery. Included in this discussion is also the language and framing you will want to use with your prescribing physician.
- Practical step-by-step sequence to help you plan your recovery. Not only do you get a plan A, but also backup plans and steps to take when you might encounter obstacles to your recovery. We will weigh the role, importance, and influence of early life traumas, family, and friends. Here we identify the harmless behaviors you have that might perpetuate your addiction, and devise strategies for overcoming them.
- Serious conversation about the viability of moderation for you, specific to your personal history and circumstances. Referral to moderation-based support groups and books, if necessary. Rather than leaving you to test-drive support resources that only pay lip service to the harm reduction approach and are merely extensions of the pervasive 12 step culture, I will introduce you to a wide range of physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, and other support resources that have adopted the harm reduction approach.
- Steps for how to navigate life with your current social network. You may be able to keep your existing social network. Keep your friends. A significant change in your behavior (such as moderating your elixir intake) could result in some distance for you in your social circle. Maybe even a little passive-aggressive name calling. But, it doesn't have to be that way. You can change your habits and still blend in. I'll show you how.
- Identification of non-12-step support resources: treatment centers, physicians, local psychologists, and rehab centers. I can help you find a wealth of resources that welcome your non-12-step perspective to recovery.
- Private consultations with a world class expert in the field of addictions. Discreetly, conveniently by telephone from the comfort and safety of your home or office.

Emphasis on the amount of alcohol or drugs consumed or the frequency of an addictive activity can be a red herring. How much you engage in a behavior that is addictive is not the bottom line. To concentrate only on your frequency of addictive behavior is like "Putting the cart before the horse."
The bottom line is ultimately how harmful your behavior is: harmful to you or to others. Abstinence or moderation is not a choice that should be made outside of the consideration of harm. The key to any addiction recovery program should always be evaluated on the degree of harm. A common approach in other parts of the Western world is known as "Harm Reduction", yet it is virtually unheard of in the United States.

Imagine walking by a bar and not even thinking twice
What if a bar held no more gravity than the parking meter on the other side of the sidewalk? Recovery means not having to think about your addiction constantly. It means being completely relaxed around alcohol or drugs. Recovery means alcohol or drugs consume no more of your energy and attention than celery.
Imagine if Drugs had no more
pull than Celery...
I know the way because . . .
Ive stood in your shoes
Over 30 years ago, I undermined my marriage and my career as an architect mired in addiction. Like many, I was referred to a 12-step program. I couldn't relate to the other addicts. I was shy and didn't feel comfortable being so open in a group of people.During these meetings, the emphasis on faith and relying on a "higher power" flew in the face of my scientific education. I knew in my heart there had to be a better way. But as I searched and sought help, I only found frustration and hopelessness. I decided to seek a better way and went back to school to train as a psychologist. During my study, I found research on dozens of alternatives that were completely unheard of in the mainstream.
Im not here to judge the 12-step process
The bottom line should always be to find a path that will help you overcome your addiction. The 12-step programs have helped many people. I work in the field of addictions because, like you, I was there, but I have come back through a different process. Not right or wrong, just different. I believe that many people out there need help. I am here to help those who do not connect with the 12-step process. The 12-step model does not have its roots in addiction treatment. It was developed in the 1930's as a way of bringing people back to Christ. The process revolved around small and intense groups confessing their sins to each other. Followers of this practice eventually splintered off and formed Alcoholics Anonymous.
In the 70 years of the 12-step movement in this country, it has become as an integral, unquestioned part of the American culture, just as Christmas, Super Bowl Sunday, and a July 4th BBQ.
As beneficial as 12-step programs have been for some, its unquestioned place as the principal method of treating addiction is more about outstanding public relations and a cult-like system. It inspires unquestioned loyalty and devotion, and discourages true examination of each individual's situation.
But, it's one-size-fits-all, faith-based, group-dependant, abstinence-only approach is also its fatal flaw. Here is just some of what I have heard from my own clients about the shortcomings of the 12-step paradigm.
- "It's just a substitute dependency."
- "It's too religious."
- "There is too much dogma."
- "I don't feel I fit in."
- "My problem isn't as bad as theirs."
- "I haven't hit rock bottom and I don't want to wait until then to make changes."
- "They say I'm powerless, but I feel I'm not powerless."
- "It's like a cult."
- "I don't feel I'm an alcoholic."
You can explore your options with a no-risk, no-obligation, no-embarrassment phone call
You can "attend" our Briefing Session in complete privacy, anywhere in the world.
- You can make this call to me from anywhere in the world.
- You can make this call from where you are most comfortable and safe; planning the steps to free yourself from your problems with alcohol or drugs.
- You can make this call in complete privacy.
- You can "attend" this session without having to walk into a public medical office.
This isn't a therapy session. This is a one-time-only information and planning session for people like you who have an urgent need to deal with their unhealthy habits - whether it's a drinking problem, a prescription or street drug problem or any other out-of-control behaviors involving gambling, sex, pornography, food, shopping, or Internet usage.
In one hour, I can show you a variety of recovery options. These recovery options have nothing to do with your religious beliefs or the need for a higher power. Your session with me is one-on-one.
Choose your treatment tools. Create your own success. Based on my own battle and successful recovery from alcohol and drugs, as well as the repeated success I've seen in my clients, I know you are not powerless over your addictions. There is no such thing as one-size-fits-all in addiction treatment, as is traditionally preached. Modern research supports that there is no singular path to recovery. In fact, it is this one-size-fits-all paradigm that creates chronic relapse, a sense of powerlessness, hopelessness, despair and often results in tremendous tragedy for people and their families.
The truth is that just because 12-step does not work for you, it doesn't mean that you are doomed. There are many other roads to recovery. The Bridging Session is designed to empower you with the knowledge of your options for recovery. You will be able to choose the best sequence of actions which fits your situation, personality, beliefs, and lifestyle goals.
In complete privacy and confidentiality, I will help you focus on a strategy and construct a solid plan that will help you jump-start your recovery.
As part of this comprehensive strategy session, I include these bonuses:
Bonus E-Book and Audio MP3 of my published handbook:"Take Control, Now!" (Value $45)
This is the ground-breaking foundation of my addiction treatment ideas. It is a hands on workbook with charts and practical applications to keep you on track.
Bonus E-Book: "AA is Not the Only Way" (Value $18)
This is an invaluable resource of non-12 step addiction treatment resources by Melanie Solomon. Over 90% of addiction treatment resources are based on the 12 step philosophy. If you desire non-12 step resources, you would have a hard time finding help without Solomon's book.
Bonus MP3 Audio: "How to Stop and Stay Stopped" (Value $150)
This is a lecture I conducted presenting the principles of my alternative addiction treatment model. Over 6 hours of detailed information, including a question and answer session with seminar participants. If you want to take meaningful steps to control your addiction - and you want to stay clear of the 12-step dogma - you will find this to be an invaluable resource. Among the key concepts that you will learn:
- FAN Concept - FAN stands for Feelings - Action - New Feeling. Learn how your feelings drive your harmful behaviors. And learn new tools to replace the "elixir" (alcohol or drug) use.
- Emotional Muscle Development - Harmful behavior is often a response to uncomfortable feelings.
Audio recording of our session
(Completely Optional - Decide at the start of the session). (Value $125)
The Bridging Session is an example of what is known in the field of psychology as a "brief intervention." They have proven to be highly successful in helping people promote changes in behavior. To accomplish so much in a short time frame requires you to be actively present and alert during the session. So present that it would be very hard to take notes or maintain a record of our session. This session will also be very rich in information and detail. Many can find the amount of information a little overwhelming. To ensure that you don't miss out on any key nuggets during our session, you can have the session recorded for your convenience to replay later.
